Mayor Kasim Reed and the Atlanta City Council: Hold a referendum on public financing of a new stadium for the Falcons
This petition had 1,144 supporters
Billionaire Arthur Blank, owner of the Falcons, wants a new stadium by 2017. And he wants Georgians to foot 20% of the one billion dollar construction costs through the city's Hotel-Motel tax. Negotiations between Blank, the Georgia World Congress Center (the state agency which owns the stadium), and the Mayor's office have produced a tentative deal which they need Atlanta City Council to approve.
There has been very little public input about whether we actually need a new stadium, and whether the public wants to fund it. (A recent Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll found most citizens are opposed.) Two NFL teams (Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers) asked the public through a referendum to approve spending public monies for construction of their billion dollar stadiums. Atlantans should be given the same choice.
Please petition the Mayor and the Atlanta City Council to hold a referendum to determine whether the citizens of Atlanta wish to approve public financing of a new stadium.
