As the COVID-19 pandemic continues and we continue physical distancing, the City of Toronto has continued to enforce its outdated liquor laws, warning people of fines for enjoying a drink in a public park.

Infectious disease experts have said publicly that we can mitigate transmission rates, in part, by being outdoors and maintaining distancing in addition to proper handwashing and other health measures. While those who own properties in Toronto can easily enjoy a beverage outdoors, and patios are available, it is time to change our liquor laws and let adults enjoy a bottle of wine or a cocktail in a City of Toronto Park. Even the City's lead spokesperson, Brad Ross, is on record saying:

"The issue, frankly, isn't someone enjoying a cold beer or glass of wine — it's the excessiveness ... organized parties with cases of beer being brought onto the beach or into parks... The city has no interest in ticketing someone having a beer."

It's time our bylaws reflect that reality.

Therefore, we ask Toronto City Council to move to allow this and end its crackdown on responsible adults enjoying drinks in public parks.
