Improve Modified Stage 2 Rules in Large Facilities to Prioritize Children’s Health &Equity

Dear Premier Ford, Minister MacLeod, Minister Elliott and Mayor Tory:
Please Adjust the Capacity Rules for Arenas, gymnastics facilities, and indoor turf fields in Ontario’s Hot Spots.
We the undersigned ask that as Ontario moves on to the next phase of Modified Stage 2/3 on November 7, the Ontario government improve the rules to prioritize children’s health, mental health and equity.
Given the size and cost of arenas, gymnastics facilities and indoor soccer fields, we the undersigned ask that capacity limits reflect this size and increase to allow all kids to continue with figure skating, learn to skate, on-ice drills, recreational gymnastics and indoor field sports.
Organized children’s programs are essential to help children stay mentally and physically healthy through the marathon of COVID-19. Organized children’s programs conduct their own screening, supervise physical distancing within the programs and keep attendance, which does much of the contact tracing work, should it ever be required.
Grocery stores, liquor stores and coffee shops are all allowed more than 10 customers, who are not even cohorted, into spaces far smaller than an ice surface, gymnastics facility or turf field.
The 10 person limit applied over the past 28 days to these massive spaces is unfair and has created a financial barrier to health and inequities to access for Ontario’s children. Before November 7, please take the opportunity to improve your modified Stage 2/3 rules and allow arenas and indoor sports fields in Ontario hot spots to return to a more reasonable safe capacity.
