Dear Premier Ford, Mayor Jim Watson, Minister Elliot, and Dr. Williams,

We are a group of small dance studio owners in Ottawa.

We have wholeheartedly complied with all health and safety measures since the beginning of the pandemic. The unclear, arbitrary lockdown measures imposed by the province during the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic threaten our survival.

We cannot stay silent any longer. Our existence is at stake.

We understand the need for public safety measures and lockdowns, particularly in light of the Covid-19 variants of concern. But the seemingly arbitrary shutdown measures do not make sense.

Our small dance studios should be allowed to hold outdoor dance classes with 10 couples from the same household (or 10 individuals) or less, wearing masks, and social distancing. It does not make sense that we can enter a big box store or a mall for non-essential items such as sports equipment or gardening supplies, and come into contact with a multitude of people from outside our household and all touch the same surfaces, but we cannot attend a small dance class outdoors, where everyone is masked and maintaining social distancing.

Unless we reach the point of a complete stay-at-home lockdown such as we experienced in the initial wave of the pandemic in March, 2020, we implore you to consider safe, viable options to maintain people’s mental health and well-being, and save our dance studios.
