Ottawa Black Diaspora Coalition started this petition to Mayor Jim Watson

On the 1-year anniversary of the death of our beloved Anthony Aust, his family and their supporters created a memorial plaque with his name, his date of birth, and a sentence that reminds us of him.

We are still occupying the memorial site outside of the police station located at 474 Elgin Street and we will not leave until we reach 250 signatures for this petition (we ask people to continue signing this petition past the 250 signatures).

We are asking the City of Ottawa to allow this plaque to remain permanently at this memorial site as a reminder of the tragic death of Anthony and a symbol that represents the devastating consequences policing has had on the Aust family and countless victims of state violence and its inherent anti-Blackness. The death of Anthony will not be in vain.

Background:

Anthony Aust was a kind, loved, and caring community member who died during a no-knock raid by the Ottawa Police on October 7, 2020. Since his death, the City of Ottawa and its police force did not engage in any form of meaningful reform that would decrease the violence they carry out in our streets. On the anniversary of his death, the Aust family, the Ottawa Black Diaspora Coalition (OBDC), and the Criminalization and Punishment Education Project (CPEP) presented a list of demands that, if enacted by the City of Ottawa, would help eradicate colonial and racist violence in our communities.

Please do not donate to Change.org if you wish to donate to the family as the money will not go to them.
