We, along with Parents Organized for a Better School District of Philadelphia, call on Mayor Kenney, Chief Education Officer Hackney, and all 17 members of the City Council to speak up for our children.

As of today, over 6,107 school children have been exposed to asbestos and other forms of dust and debris in our city’s schools. This poses significant risks to both their current and future health. Furthermore, due to school closures, these students have missed a significant number of instructional days, which has negatively impacted their daily learning and overall sense of safety and well-being. There are countless stories of the hardships and loss students have experienced due to weeks and weeks of school closures.

These are our city’s children, and we have heard no public statements, declarations, or press conferences from the Mayor’s Office nor from many members of the City Council. We demand an immediate, public statement in response to the public health crisis created by asbestos in our children’s schools and we demand effective oversight—which includes accountability—of the mayoral appointed Board of Education in regard to the safety of both the students and staff in all of our school buildings.

In the midst of other crises that impact thousands of citizens, elected officials stand arm in arm with the children and families of their city. We expect no less for the 6,107 children in Philadelphia who have been denied access to safe, healthy schools.
