Why this petition matters

In our society, segregation of waste is not properly done from the initial level - within our homes. Unfortunately, we are driven by the mindset that "waste is mere waste" and it does not require any form of management aside from the usual "itapon mo sa basurahan". Most Filipino families would often only use a garbage bag to gather all of their waste for an entire week (if the garbage collection is done on a weekly basis, which is the norm for our country).

Lack of waste segregation leads to the collection and transportation of unsegregated mixed waste to landfills has a negative impact on the environment. Proper waste segregation reduces the amount of waste that reaches landfills and takes up less space. Pollution of air and water can also be considerably reduced when hazardous waste is separated and treated separately.

Let's take small steps forward. This petition aims to gather the local authorities' attention to redraw long term vision in waste management and rework the strategies according to the changing lifestyles of the residents. A garbage management plan should be reinvented and implemented in our community so we can properly manage our waste instead of just dumping it.

While processes should be set in place, the participation of residents has a huge role on the efficiency of proper waste management. It is upon us to do what we can as responsible citizens and be mindful of the waste we generate and how to get rid of them. With this petition, we aim to bring awareness towards a more sustainable development and promote community awareness in terms of waste management.
