Ryan Field Neighbors started this petition to Mayor Hagerty and

Welsh-Ryan sits in a residential area, the ordinance before the Evanston City Council would allow for the sale of alcohol by creating a special classification license, which would ONLY benefit NU.  We call on the City Council to delay this vote until the full impact of this change can be evaluated, particularly in light of NU's pending application to begin hosting professional events!

Northwestern University is seeking to amend the Evanston Liquor Code so that it could sell alcohol at all events in the Arena.  (At this point, NU has limited the amendment to the Arena; it has discussed the possibility of later expanding the alcohol sales to the stadium, the baseball park, and other facilities in the complex if the sales in the Arena go well.)

The Arena seats about 7000 people, and is host to over 50 events each year.  The text of the amendment is available at pages 162-167 of this link:

This amendment is currently set for final vote at the City Council meeting on July 8, at 7pm.  If you wish to speak at this meeting, you should plan to arrive early to sign up.  If the amendment is approved, NU’s next step will be to seek a liquor license before the Liquor Commission.
This issue is moving quickly through the City Council, it is important to note that the Liquor Commissioner in Evanston is the Mayor, who has already voted in favor of this change.
If you do not want the rushed approval of a new special zoning for Northwestern that would create a 7,000 person bar in our community, please come to the City Council Meeting Monday, write the Mayor and your Alderman to oppose.
