Petition to convert Old Alton Bridge also known as “Goatman’s Bridge” into a memorial.

In the city of Denton Texas, home to University of North Texas and Texas Women’s University there is a nationally visited destination for ghostly entertainment. Commonly known as “Goatman’s Bridge”.The history of The Old Alton Bridge is dark and full of racially motivated violence and bloodshed. In the year 1938 A black man, father, and husband by the name of Oscar Washburn was murdered by the terrorist group KKK, as well as his entire family within the same night. Oscar Washburn was a locally successful goat herder, one day Oscar put a sign on the bridge that stated “This way to goatman’s” which infuriated the terrorists. They kidnapped him from his home and lynched him on that same bridge. When they went down to view his body, it was gone. The terrorist group members searched for him and after not finding anything thought that if they burned down his home with his family inside he would be drawn out in an attempt to save his family. Devastatingly, his whole family was burned alive. Now 83 years later, the bridge is wildly a tourists destination for Youtuber’s and the like. This petition is to convert the bridge into a memorial for Oscar, his family, and every black life stolen throughout the history of that bridge. We are calling for action by the mayor of Denton, Gerard Hudspeth and the city council to convert The Old Alton bridge into a memorial and make 2021 the last of 83 years of disturbance and mockery.
