Now there is no one solution that completely stops global warming but there are actions we can take to reduce the effects. Something as simple as educating others around you about this issue can help gain awareness to push our leaders and decision-makers to act. Research has shown that 89% of plastics in the ocean are single-use plastics. These plastics are made from fossil fuel-based chemicals which are one of the main sources of excess carbon in the air. With the increase of carbon, there have been irregularities in our weather making natural disasters even more extreme. These issues affect third-world countries and minorities.

The EPA estimates that 75% of the American waste stream is recyclable, but we only recycle about 30% of it. Which means a majority of our waste ends up in oceans. By taxing single-use items such as plastic single-use items were are in turn lowering the demand for plastic production. Thus we are less reliant on plastic and instead more on eco-friendly alternatives. I’m urging you to push your decision-makers to tax single-use items. With the tax revenue collected, we can invest that money in better eco-friendly infrastructure and reusable items(and hopefully make reusable items such as reusable plastic bags eventually free). Act now before it’s too late!
