PETITION AGAINST 'UNIVERSITY DRIVE' NAME CHANGE TO 'SANDRA BLAND PARKWAY'
This petition had 2,548 supporters
In light of the decision by the City of Prairie View City Council on August 25, 2015 to rename the University Drive to Sandra Bland Parkway, we have formed a proactive support group that we shall call ”University Driven”.
The circumstances that led to Ms. Bland’s death were tragic, but renaming the main entrance to the Prairie View A&M University would be a travesty. This decision would not shed light on the changes that need to be made in our community; it will shed darkness on our community. We do not want the words Prairie View to be forever synonymous with Sandra Bland.
Although we sympathize with the situation and understand her family’s desires that her name be spoken, we would prefer that it not be forever the driving force into or around Prairie View A&M University.
We will not speak of that tragic chain of events of those days, in any manner. We will not create any avenues for negativity. It is not culturally productive for us to stand against that cause. We just do not want the community to be so strongly impacted just because.
We would like to petition the City of Prairie View, Texas to allow the University Drive name to remain the same and further request that it never be changed.
To be a part of this support group and request, we ask that you circulate this petition and on Tuesday, September 1, 2015 do not drive on the small stretch of University Drive between US Highway 290 and FM 1098/Owens Rd. This will be a positive demonstration of solidarity from those of us that do not support the decision to change the name of the main entrance into Prairie View University.
Together we will simply say, ”There has got to be another way”.
Alternative Campus entrance routes for September 1, 2015

We agree with the solution and proposal from Mayor Jackson for the park ONLY and desire to immediately nullify and rescind the street name change. This way we are celebrating the life and legacy of ALL of Prairie View
From Mayor Frank Jackson
The proposal to name University Drive is being proposed by Dewayne Charleston. The proposal to name the New City Park (Where the Old Gulf Service Station was located) is being put forward by me. The proposal is to develop this site into a Memorial Park with a "Wall of Honor" in memory of members of the PV Family that have gone on beyond this life. The City will install outdoor tables, chairs and build a Gazebo with small outdoor pits for cooking. Like it of not, Sandra Bland in death has elevated the conversation about the quality of "Black Life" to a higher level. The Texas Senate will initiate a "Jail Standards" study; The Texas House - County Affairs Committee will adress County Jails and their operations. It is bringing about a new conversation on prisons. The issue of Mental Health will also have to be addressed. Why when two Black young men die that CNN or none of the National Networks came. But when an issue that had racial overtones come about, then the world finds interest. Mental Health of Blacks and Whites, from Slavery, to Jim Crow, to Civil Rights, to the Present may help us understand why both PVAMU and TSU have 12% & 9% 4 year graduation rates respectively. Why it is hard to get Banks and other businesses to build in PV.
