Bellport Residents Oppose Local Law #1 2018

0 have signed. Let’s get to 500!

Did you know that Local Law #1……

o   Makes it a violation to have unregistered houseguests, absent the homeowner, for anyone who may rent their home at any time during the year.
o   Makes it a violation for houseguests—even kids—to sleep in the den, for anyone who may rent their home at any time during the year.
o   Bans rentals under 16 days from May 15th – September 15th.
o   Allows the government to fine you up to $5000 for a violation of this law.

Currently, proposed Local Law #1 restricts Bellport homeowners’ rights to rent their homes, and when they do rent it requires a long, costly registration process, including an application and home inspection.

We need to act fast. The Board of Trustees are voting on February 26th.

Those signing here oppose Local Law #1. Instead, we propose practical solutions directly linked to the tranquility, safety, and well-being of Bellport residents and visitors, such as: strengthening enforcement of code (e.g. noise, over-occupancy), penalizing violators, and removing minimum rental periods, which don’t address concerns directly and will cause many unintended harmful consequences for our community.

The law as currently proposed will be very difficult to roll back once approved. Sign this petition before February 12th, the day of the next Board of Trustees working group, to show support for a more moderate and effective approach.

Who should sign?
o   You want to continue Bellport’s tradition and reputation as a welcoming, friendly village.
o   You care about keeping Bellport a dynamic place with restaurants, shops, other services.
o   You would like the option to rent a village home for visiting friends or family.
o   You currently rent or may consider renting in the future.
o   You feel the village should not dictate in this manner how/when/why your home is used.
o   You want to support neighbors who fall into any of the above!
