End Food Insecurity Among College Students

End Food Insecurity Among College Students
Hello! Our names are Cheyenne Bryant, Tysir Nixon, and Jane Marcillo,
As many individuals know, there is a lot of poverty along with food insecurity that occurs in the state of New Jersey among college students. Did you know the current poverty rate in New Jersey is 12.5% with 8.2% being from hunger and food insecurity? With about 240,200 college students in New Jersey, that means about 80,000 are going to class hungry (Noonan & Mishkin, 2019). There are so many more statistics to show how many college students are suffering from going hungry while attending school. We could go on to stress this problem students and their families are going through, however, we'd rather explain how this can be resolved.
Supporting the Hunger-Free Campus Bill will allow for many college students to no longer struggle with food insecurity.
An important organization that was the original architect of the bill is "Swipe Out Hunger" is a non-profit organization that collects excess meal "swipes" toward the end of the semester and converts the money into meals for the homeless or impoverished people in the area around different colleges.
"Swipe Out Hunger" has been recognized as a model for social change on America's college campuses and an emerging pioneer in the non-profit area of hunger prevention and alleviation by The White House, Forbes, The Case Foundation, and other influential organizations" (Swipe Out Hunger). This foundation would be a great source for college campuses to add.
With this bill, it will also establish food pantries for students to access food regularly. Lastly, it creates opportunities for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and provides information on how to apply for these benefits.
We must make a change! Isn't it time to take a stand to end hunger among our fellow students and their families? Join us and sign this petition to help end hunger and bring this incredible organization to light!
