Nick Padilla started this petition to Mayor Emily Beach and

Father Junipero Serra forced Natives into servitude in order to build his series of missions and spread Christianity through the state. Rather than a symbol of love and acceptance, he stands as one of genocide and destruction. He is not a person who represents the views of this beautiful place we call home. If we are to grow as a community and put our past behind us, we must take down these monuments that only serve to glorify and celebrate a past rife with death, disease, and forced servitude.

As a lifetime resident of the Bay Area, I have driven past this statue my entire life with a mixture of confusion and frustration that this monument to colonization and genocide continues to "point the way" for us all. I feel saddened and disgusted that this statue has stood for so long in a place that has always prided itself for being open-minded and forward thinking.

If you agree with this please sign this petition which will be presented to the City Council of Burlingame in hopes that this offensive statue will be taken down.
