New York City's Mayor de Blasio recently praised a Hasidic yeshiva in Crown Heights for "giving its students the tools they need to build solid foundations for their futures.”
But this institution, Oholei Torah, does not give its students any tools for their future. They don’t teach English, math, science, or social studies. In fact, Oholei Torah is one of the 39 yeshivas currently undergoing an investigation by the New York City Department of Education due to their failure to comply with New York State Education Law. Incredibly, Oholei Torah is one of the most egregious offenders out of the 39 yeshivas under investigation where its graduates testify they received no secular education whatsoever.
And yet the law states: “If a child attends a nonpublic school… the board of education of the school district in which the child resides must be assured that the child is receiving instruction which is substantially equivalent to that provided in the public schools." and "...schools shall provide for instruction in at least the twelve common school branches of arithmetic, reading, spelling, writing, the English language, geography, United States history, civics, hygiene, physical training, the history of New York state and science."
Mayor de Blasio praises a school that deprives its students of an education and forces them as adults to get menial jobs or go on welfare.
We, the undersigned, call on Mayor de Blasio to:
- Issue a retraction of his letter to Oholei Torah.
- Issue a public apology to former and current students of Oholei Torah.
Mayor de Blasio: please stand up and fight for the educational rights of Hasidic children!
