The deteriorating traffic situation on North Rouse/Bridger Canyon Dr. presents serious safety hazards and logistical difficulties to North Bozeman residents.  Northeast neighborhoods are separated from emergency services, hospitals, work, and town by railroad tracks on L street, Griffin, and Rouse.  A single train frequently blocks access on all three arteries.

Existing infrastructure is inadequate to support existing traffic needs, and the situation is worsening due to a confluence of factors:

Why the city needs to act now:

  • An increase in railroad traffic - Montana Rail Link anticipates substantial growth in rail traffic over the next 5 years.
  • Increased auto traffic from new housing, commercial & park development north of the tracks.
  • Recently approved and newly proposed high-density urban zoning will result in increased traffic - substantially impacting Story Mill, Bridger Canyon traffic volume.

Proposed Actions

  • Develop over- or under-passes to solve the problem, and
  • Postpone any additional development in the isolated NE area until the necessary traffic improvements are completed.
