Retain Royal Athletic Park as a multi-sport facility

Soccer's future at Victoria's Royal Athletic Park is under threat!

Originally opened in 1902, Royal Athletic Park (RAP) has served as downtown Victoria's outdoor multi-sport and event facility since 1908. It boasts a legacy of playing host to several sports for almost 104 years.

However, the City of Victoria recently announced that it wants to convert the park to a single-sport facility as of 2013. The City has stated to the news media that the bidding process is first-come-first-serve - and the first applicant happens to be a Vancouver businessman who wants to create a new baseball team and have them play at RAP. There is talk that a permanent outfield wall would be built for baseball, preventing soccer from being player at RAP.

This would mean that Victoria Highlanders FC, Victoria United, the Vancouver Island Soccer League, numerous cup finals and youth soccer would be barred from playing at RAP for many years to come.

The timing is horrible. Soccer is growing rapidly here in Canada - it is the country's most popular participatory sport, and arguably the fastest-growing spectator sport (with Vancouver joining Major League Soccer in 2012, Montreal joining MLS in 2013, and the Canadian Soccer Association currently investigating the viability of creating a national division 2 soccer league - which would be perfect for a city like Victoria).

We hereby demand that the City of Victoria protect Royal Athletic Park's century-plus legacy as serving as a multi-sport venue - for the benefit of the entire sporting community.
