Protect the rights of backyard chickens
- Welcome I am a indigenous American that is a resident of Jonesboro in Clayton County Georgia.I am a proud owner of 7 hens who I bought as hatchlings,And 1 rooster that was given to us by a friend. It has been a joy and fun for my family especially my children. My children take turns feeding and making sure our chickens have water. One day I got a knock on my door from the code enforcer and was told that I couldn't have chickens in my yard and that it was illegal in a residential area. The reason the code enforcer found out is because someone else who also owned chickens was handed a warning and they decided to tell on me also .So it seems their are a lot of people in my area that also love and own chickens. It is not illegal in the state of Georgia to own chickens as long as the property and living spaces are kept clean and sanitary with approval. In many families chickens are kept as pets and are members of the family. The county see them as livestock and also domestic animals. For anyone who has owned chickens we know they are clean and charismatic birds. That have been stereotyped as being a nuisance, noisy and unclean. So I am going to state some facts about chickens from my own experience and research.
Fact:Chickens eat weeds and disease carrying insects Misconception: Chickens are dirty and smelly Fact:Chickens spend hours each day dust bathing and preening themselves to maintain good hygiene.
Misconception:Chickens hurt property values. Facts: No evidence. Misconception:Chickens are noisy Hens are not noisy and roosters are no noisier in volume or frequency than a barking dogs. Barking dog at 1 meter=70-100dB. Lawnmower at 1 meter=107dB. Rooster at 1 meter=48dB(a sneeze is louder). Intermittent daytime noises are a normal part of living in any community and regulations should not discriminate against any species or gender within a species. Misconception: chickens require a lot of land. Fact: Chickens require no acreage to be well kept. Residents of all major US cities including New York, Denver and Los Angeles keep chickens with no acreage at all. Misconception: Chickens are kept only for egg production therefore limits on flock size should be calculated by the number of eggs a family needs. Facts: chickens are kept for many reasons for eggs, as pets ,therapy animals, hobby shorebirds, for egg color variations and to preserve heritage breeds in danger of extinction.
The Right to Food and indigenous peoples. Indigenous peoples like everyone else have a right to adequate food and a fundamental right to be free from hunger. This was stipulated in article 11 of the international covenant on economic, social and cultural rights of 1966 and constitutes binding international law. In addition the UN declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples adopted in September 2007 .
Hahom(Thankyou) for taking the time to read my petition please sign in support. I feel that chickens are being discriminated against and are being targeted because of someone's lack of knowledge and misconception. In our society we live in today because of misconceptions it has led to discrimination, misunderstanding, harassment, judgment and ignorance.
Each one teach many, let your voice be heard ✊Hahom(Thankyou)
