Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit Public Health Program Cuts

Residents of Haldimand-Norfolk please keep our families and community healthy. Tell Mayor Kristal Chopp, Chair of the Board of Health and Dr. Shanker Nesathurai, Medical Officer of Health, to reverse these harmful cuts to our community services.

Public Health Nurses provide chronic disease and injury prevention services in our schools, workplaces and, community. They run smoking cessation and vaccination clinics. Nurses provide program delivery, monitoring, investigating, and controlling of infectious disease outbreaks such as the recent coronavirus, influenza, meningitis, measles and tuberculosis. In sexual health clinics, nurses provide counselling and health education to youth. They also provide blood-borne infection testing and monitoring for such diseases as HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B and C and tuberculosis. In addition, these nurses provide pregnancy counselling and support, prenatal support, home visits for vulnerable families and the elderly, run breastfeeding clinics, and partner with many community agencies.

The Board of Health has approved:

1. The elimination of two public health nurse positions and one Nurse Practitioner position
2. Closure of all 1:1 sexual health services, leaving service to only high school students
3. Cuts to sexual health and other Public Health services to vulnerable populations and those in poverty, homeless or with Mental Illnesses including those with no other supports or family doctors
4. Termination of all 1:1 Smoking Cessation Clinics

This is irresponsible. Sign the petition and put Nurses back in Public Health.
