Keep Miami-Dade a sanctuary county for immigrants

There are approximately 156,000 undocumented immigrants living in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties, with the majority residing in Miami-Dade. A majority of these immigrants come from Central and South America — largely from Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Colombia and Venezuela. On Thursday, January 26, 2017, one day after President Donald Trump targeted so-called sanctuary cities and jurisdictions, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez issued a memo stating it would comply with the new White House anti-immigration policy. This stance not only drives a wedge of distrust between law enforcement and our immigrant community, but it blatantly ignores Miami’s long history as a city of immigrants
Sanctuary cities and counties are called that because they offer sanctuary to illegal immigrants, refusing to turn them over to federal officials for deportation. Most sanctuary cities and counties have also passed laws preventing employees from even turning over information to immigration officials.
Join our petition and stand with Miami-Dade immigrants. Let Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez and the Board of County Commissioners know that you do not support Trump's Anti-Immigration policies. Support Miami as a safe haven for immigrants.
