Following the two back-to-back shootings which occurred in Orlando, Florida, one of which has now become the biggest and deadliest mass shooting in the nation's history, there is no question that there needs to be stricter weapon regulation in The City Beautiful.
At present, it is possible for almost any person in the state to purchase and own a deadly civilian rifle, the class of weapon which includes the gun used in the deadly terrorist attack which left more than 50 individuals dead and dozens more wounded, the AR-15.
These weapons have absolutely no place in an urban environment like Orlando. They are completely inappropriate for any and all circumstances in our city, and frankly, in our state as a whole. Mayor Buddy Dyer is the sitting mayor for Orlando, and as such, has the voice necessary to put legitimate pressure on our representatives in Congress.
These lawmakers must work together to prohibit high-powered weapons from being owned in our city and across our state. Introducing this legislation would send a powerful message to the other members of local legislatures throughout the country, and would signal that the United States is ready for legitimate change.
Signing this petition will be an indication to lawmakers that enough is enough. We need stricter weapon regulation, and this is the first step.
