Rename Niagara Square to Thurgood Marshall Square

0 have signed. Let’s get to 100!

We would like to rename Niagara Square which is in front of City Hall and is near our court house and many lawyer offices to Thurmond Marshall Square. Thurgood Marshall was an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, serving from October 1967 until October 1991. Marshall was the Court's 96th justice and its first African-American justice. Just recently a major motion picture called Marshall, which Chadwick Boseman stars in the title role of the Buffalo-made film “Marshall.”This Buffalo-made Hollywood biopic about the early career of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and Buffalo City Hall and Niagara Square play prominent roles.

We would like to rename the square to Thurmond Marshall Square to pay homage to the civil rights leader, the attorney responsible for Brown Vs. the Board of Education's victory in the U.S. Supreme Court (and therefore the official end of segregation) and the first African- American justice is a hero and legend.

We also would like to pay tribute to the movie being filmed here and this exciting time in Buffalo, where history is being made everyday.  In light of the recent events across the United States with race relations being strained, we need to balance out the recognition of the contributions of past Americans from all nationalities.

We would like this done on July 2nd, 2018 to commemorate his 110th birthday.  We would like to invite the family to Buffalo, NY to attend this special moment.

Here is the bio on the legend Thurgood Marshall.
