Irvington's Matthiessen Park has always been an iconic representation of what makes our town special.  It's beautiful setting on the Hudson River has been the home to July 4th celebrations, Irvington High School graduation ceremonies, various K-12 school functions and trips, community gatherings, and safe family outings for Irvington residents. Unfortunately, some people wish to change that by opening the park to non-residents which could result in many unintended and possibly dangerous consequences.

Matthiessen Park is a stone's throw from the Metro-North train station which will afford easy access for any individual willing to purchase a train ticket. That could quite possibly lead to eventual overcrowding, over-flowing garbage cans, a need for additional police patrol, and patronage from outsiders seeking a safe-haven for drug deals and other illicit activities. All of this will lead to an increase in taxpayer expenses for maintenance of the park itself as well as police presence in order to ensure the safety of residents. Couple this with the other proposed changes that include allowing bicycles, scooters and roller blades as well as dogs on leashes and one can imagine that the quiet, relaxing, and family friendly residents-only park can quickly morph into a busy, chaotic and crowded public park that is much less safe for the young families that moved here with quite different expectations.

Irvington's Scenic Hudson Park, walking distance from Matthiessen, is currently available to non-residents for use so it is unclear why there is a push to alter the character of Matthiessen - it is also unnecessary. Save taxpayer dollars, ensure that Matthiessen Park does not become over-crowded, and help keep Irvington children and residents safe. Keep Matthiessen Park a residents-only destination.
