Symbral Foundation for Community Services started this petition to Mayor Bowser and

Where would you be if you were caught in a situation where you needed care but no one was there to support you? What if you needed help taking care of someone you love, but no one could afford to lend a hand?

"Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) in the intellectual and developmental disability field receive far less supervision, have much more autonomy and on-the-spot decision making than any direct support workers in any other field. In addition to helping people with developmental disabilities live their best lives, DSPs help people attain their employment goals; foster integrated activities within the community, provide instruction on transportation competencies, make certain medication is properly taken, teach daily household skills, and encourage personal growth - to name a few job expectations. They are responsible for averting all of the threats that could impact a person who is being supported. They are a person's ambassador to their community and are often the gateway to how the person interacts with his/her community throughout their life.

The role of a DSP is much more involved than a minimum wage job, and in order to protect workers as well as those persons supported, it cannot be treated as such. An already indisputable crisis exists in DSP recruitment, retention, and staffing. The supplement to hourly wages as directed by the DSP Payment Rate of 2019 will allow providers to recognize seniority and competency and give DSPs in DC a Fair Shot.  We ask that Mayor Bowser include the necessary funding of $8.8M in local dollars in the FY21 Budget to cover the costs of implementation of the Direct Support Professional Payment Rate of 2019.

If you live in Washington DC, please sign this petition to grab Mayor Bowser's attention and pay DSPs the wage they deserve.
