The intersection at Berry and Grand Streets in Williamsburg, Brooklyn desperately needs a traffic light equipped with a red light camera! Every weekday hundreds of students at PS 84 and their caregivers risk their lives crossing the street to get to school protected only by stop signs rendered invisible by construction sheds, outdoor dining structures, routinely double-parked school buses, construction vehicles, and personal cars. Drivers cannot see the stop signs and routinely disregard them. This situation poses an immediate threat to public safety! Recently a parent member of the school community was struck and seriously injured by a driver who failed to yield to the existing stop signs. It is only a matter of time before someone is killed!

  The current traffic infrastructure at Berry and Grand dates from a time when the area was a low-density residential neighborhood with an industrial waterfront. Traffic along Grand has increased substantially over the past few years due to the ongoing large-scale residential development, attractions such as Domino Park, dining, and retail establishments along the waterfront adding tens of thousands of new pedestrians to the area. Coupled with endless construction, routine vehicular non-compliance with the existing all-way stop signs, the visual barriers created by scaffolding and open restaurant sheds has created a hazardous condition for pedestrians With the continued development of high-density residential buildings in the area, the amount of foot traffic will only increase. The current traffic controls are simply no longer adequate for the Wiilliamsburg of today, or the future. A traffic light with a red light camera will make this intersection safer for both the PS 84 and larger Southside communities.
