On June 15, Mayor de Blasio announced the closing of the Fulton Street Black Lives Matter Way for the duration of the summer. There are some that question the positivity of this initiative and may take steps to have the streets reopened asap; however, in the days since this mural installation, the level of pride and excitement surrounding its creation has revived the spirit of the Bed Stuy community, despite our continued fight for police reform and policies that support equality across the City.

Simultaneous to this struggle we have had to deal with the crippling affect COVID-19 has had on many families and small businesses along this corridor. The increased foot traffic created by this plaza would revitalize these businesses and provide sidewalk vending opportunities for other local businesses. Transforming car space into public space has helped local areas across this city to grow and thrive, while fostering unity amongst the community members and promoting spending time outdoors. It can do the same for Bed Stuy.

The plaza can be re-purposed during summer 2020 to create opportunities for community development. Black Lives Matters Way can host  exercise classes, bike clinics, art classes and other socially distanced activities for all ages. The plaza would allow generations of people to fellowship together and learn to respect and appreciate each other in the process. Seniors, in particular, would now have a place to sit, relax and converse with ease.

Sign this petition and let Mayor de Blasio Black Live Matters plaza would have a positive impact on the community and should be retained throughout the summer.
