Mayor de Blasio: Appoint Dr. Kathleen Cashin Schools Chancellor

Mayor Bill de Blasio's out-of-state pick for schools chancellor turned down the job. So it's decision time again!  Dr. Kathleen Cashin is my first choice pick for NYC Schools Chancellor and she should be the Mayor's next pick.

I've followed her career since she was principal at PS 193 Brooklyn when my daughter attended in the 1990s. As Region 5 Superintendent, Dr. Cashin was responsible for “some of the roughest territory in the New York City school system — vast stretches of poverty and desolation from Ocean Hill-Brownsville and East New York in Brooklyn to Far Rockaway in Queens,” and got results (Sharon Otterman, NYTimes 3/15/2011). "Her elementary and middle schools consistently posted the best total gains on annual reading and math tests, outpacing other regions with similar legacies of low achievement" (David Herszenhorn NY Times 12/4/06).

Since 2011 Dr. Cashin serves (unpaid) on the NYS Board of Regents. She's smart, charismatic, and has a record of achievement. She’s got political moxie and as Superintendent was not afraid to buck then Mayor Bloomberg’s/Chancellor Joel Klein’s school reforms when they conflicted with her core beliefs on how kids learn best. Parents, educators, students and leading education advocates trust Kathleen Cashin with the education of NYC's children--regardless of their zip code--because she's earned it.

We know you want the best for New York City's kids, please now do it by appointing Kathleen Cashin the next schools chancellor.
