In New York City public schools there is only a one-semester health education course requirement which includes a unit on sex education in middle and high school; however, there is no separate course focused solely on this subject. NYC public schools still fail to provide even this minimal requirement. This means there is no time dedicated to in-depth sex education. Students lack the necessary information, resources, and time needed to keep them safe and comfortable. Each school should have at least one teacher dedicated to health. There need to be in-depth teacher training in order to provide the best possible education and the safest classrooms. In May of 2018, the DOE chancellor announced a four year 24 million dollar initiative towards comprehensive sexual health education. While there have been some funds allocated to sexual education; with a 34 billion dollar annual budget for schools, plus another 17 billion dollars for equipment and building, the city can give more to sex-ed. The DOE and city need to make sexual health a priority, with the right amount of time and money there can be major improvements in students knowledge of and physical sexual health.
