Plant Save America:  A Petition for the Planet

The essence of life is relationships. Regardless of our differences, we all live and exist together in relation to - and thus in relationship with - every person, place, thing, construct, idea, etc. that surrounds us. Recognizing this, it is important that we regularly take inventory of how these interactions exist and endure. We must question both their nature and their consequence. Asking things like, "is this working? Is this serving our greatest good, or is there perhaps a better way? What are the long term implications of x y and z? Can we reorganize and reassess to do more with less?"

With imminent threats of climate change, global warming and biodiversity loss, it is quite clear – from all angles, all across the world – that we are destroying our planet and home.

In genuine response to this, Plant Save America is a social advocacy and awareness campaign dedicated to the collective revival of reverence for our home, planet earth. It’s a petition for change and accountability but also – and perhaps even more so – a petition to mobilize and recruit support.

Structured around the ancient principles and practice of three sisters agriculture, PSA relies on the cooperative nature of the three bodies involved that can create the change we need: the public, those in politics and of course, our home, the planet.

Our elected officials need to know that we stand with them as they prepare to push new policies and practices that prioritize planet health and sustainability. It is not going to be easy. In fact, it will be quite disruptive.

Anticipating this, it is our civic duty – and well within our sphere of influence – to participate and voice our concern. If you’ve been feeling helpless and frustrated; insert yourself here.

Starting where we are (New York) with what we have (the Internet and very little time), this particular petition speaks now to the citizens of NYC, Mayor de Blasio, and the New York City Climate Mobilization Act, also known as the NYC Green New Deal.

Per the website, “ONENYC 2050 is a strategy to secure our city’s future against the challenges of today and tomorrow. With bold actions to confront our climate crisis, achieve equality, and strengthen our democracy, we are building a fair and strong city.”

Included in the comprehensive ONENYC 2050 plan, the city’s climate crisis goals are as follows:

  • Achieve carbon neutrality and 100 percent clean electricity
  • Strengthen communities, buildings, infrastructure, and the waterfront to be more resilient
  • Create economic opportunities for all New Yorkers through climate action
  • Fight for climate accountability and justice

No, you may be thinking, why New York? In many ways, New York is unlike the rest of the country; it's a pilot place. It’s where ideas – often radical – are tested and observed (Civil Eats). By working with our environment and those elected as representative officials, we have an incredible opportunity in front of us.

With far-reaching goals of awareness, advocacy, and action, PSA is a plea for symbiosis. It’s a plug to work together, and therein lies the modern interpretation of three sister’s agriculture: a thoughtful strategy and practice that honors the influence and interconnectedness of life in close proximity.

The intent of our work is to inspire and invest in more thoughtful connection between person, plant and planet. Leveraging the accessibility of the Internet and social media, it’s an easy first step towards a more sustainable future. It’s recognition that something – or some things, rather – are not quite not right. As awareness begets action, so too is this a logical entry point initiating long-term, long-lasting and large-scale change.

May all signatures here be seen and received as symbols of understanding and support. May all beings everywhere do what they can with what they have. May we take small steps and share them with others. May we spread information and inspiration, and celebrate the little victories – because small seeds reap big plants.
