Today, Italian-Americans and others celebrate Columbus Day. Several cities have decommissioned Columbus Day because of his acts of genocide against indigenous people in the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. We're all for kicking out Columbus, but what about celebrating another Italian that discovered North America? Giovanni da Verrazzano is our guy! In 1524, Verrazzano sailed from Europe to the East Coast of North America. He travelled up from North Carolina to Newfoundland. In his adventures, he stopped in New York Bay and peacefully met with the Lenape indigenous people as well as the Wampanoag people in Narragansett, Rhode Island. I hope the Italian-American community and the rest of the United States can observe Verrazzano Day. He already has a bridge in New York and Rhode Island and a statue in Manhattan, so why not have a federal holiday?
