Serin Sarsour started this petition to Mayor of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio

Did you know that 133 billion pounds of food is uneaten and is thrown out in the United States every year?

Restaurants account for 70% of that commercial food waste.

  • However, in 2013, a program called the Food Waste Challenge was executed in NYC to help reduce that number. By participating in the Food Waste Challenge, 100 restaurants agreed to reduce 50% of food wasted in their establishments.
  • This petition is to help bring back the Food Waste Challenge. Continuing the Food Waste Challenge would contribute to the overall reduction of food waste found in landfills and greenhouse gases in America.
  • The Food Waste Challenge was popularized in 2013, but this community program should still be present today. In fact, it would be a way to inform New Yorkers about food waste and how it affects the atmosphere.
  • Restaurants make up the majority of food waste in America, so having a hundred restaurants in New York participating in the Food Waste Challenge for consecutive years can set an example for restaurants in the rest of the states in America.

Please support and sign this petition today to be a part of the journey of reducing food waste in NYC by reinstating the Food Waste Challenge. Thank you!
