We are the parents, families, and staff of a community child care facility and school on South Potomac Street. We oppose the proposed redesign of the Potomac Street Cycle Track due to the following reasons:
1. Snow removal in the winter. As we all know, snow plows do not make it down alley streets as they have nowhere to put the snow. We understand that our parents must go to work even when it snows so we made it a priority to open during snow events whenever possible. However, when the snow is not removed we cannot open the school.
2. The reduced amount of parking makes it difficult for parents and staff to find parking. We cannot function without our staff. A delayed staff member completely disrupts the school’s schedule.
3. The narrowed angled parking spots make it challenging to load and unload children into their car seats as well as accidently causing damage to other vehicles.
4. Pedestrian, motorist, and cyclist safety concerns due to the northbound cycle track on a southbound street. As it is currently constructed, having a two-way cycle track on a one-way street is dangerous for children, staff, and parents crossing the street as well as the motorists and cyclists.
We propose returning curbside parking and creating a traditional bike lane that is appropriate for neighborhood streets.
