Please help us improve pedestrian safety in Rhodes by adding your name to this petition calling for a reduction in the speed limit to 40km per hour and increasing pedestrian crossings.

We’ll be asking Canada Bay councillor Mayor Angelo Tsirekas  and  Local Member The Hon. John Sidoti to act on this petition for the good of all who live, work and come to Rhodes for recreation and work.

We know that in Australia 15% of all fatalities are pedestrian. We urgently need additional pedestrian crossings and a reduction in the speed limit. We have to keep our families and children safe by reducing vehicle speed.

Pedestrian crossings

The suggested locations for crossings from 400 parents in Rhodes: Pedestrian crossings are needed on Shoreline Drive, where car speeds are high, and it is hard for pedestrians to see traffic because of the curvature of the road.

    Suggested locations:

  • Near "The Connection" where a lot of children cross the road to the playground
  • At the busy intersection of Mary Street and Shoreline Dr – an accident black spot
  • At the busy intersection of Gauthorpe St and Shoreline Dr
  • At the intersection of Peake Ave and Shoreline Dr
  • At the intersection of Nina Gray Ave and Shoreline Drive, which may also need a fish eye mirror because of the curved road.

In fact there are currently only two dedicated pedestrian crossings: one at Rhodes Railway Station and one opposite Rhodes Shopping Centre This is not sufficient to keep our local community safe.

Vehicle speeds:

We are calling for Rhodes to have a speed limit reduction to 40kph throughout the precinct for the safety of residents.

There are more than 12,000 persons living in a high density environment in Rhodes and it’s increasing every year as developers plan and build 30/40 storey tower blocks in the precinct.

Vehicles use local roads as “rat-runs” to avoid a 40kph limit on Rider Blvd - frequently exceeding the 50kph speed limit. The existing 40kph is approximately 500 meters (in total) on Walker St, Mary St and Rider Blvd. All other streets have 50kph limit and high pedestrian concentrations.
