Don Standing started this petition to Mayor and Council of Parksville BC

The Parksville Wetlands were purchased from the Ermineskin band with the condition that it would stay a natural area in perpetuity. Now the Mayor and Council are proposing using 9 acres for the Aquatic Centre. This would require the destruction of the forest and habitat it provides. It would also seriously degrade the wetlands which would affect both our water quality and quantity.

The city owns at least two other sites that are already ecologically compromised, but, for some reason, the Despard site is the one being studied.  The Council "does not expect" damage to the aquifer. And if they're wrong? We already have to deal with water shortages. We should be doing everything possible to protect our water as well as our little remaining urban forest.

I am asking you to sign this if you believe that "in perpetuity" means just that, if you believe that we need to protect our water, if you believe we need to protect our forested areas.

There are many ways to measure value. Money is often the least of these: its only benefit is that it is easy to graph and throw up on a powerpoint presentation.

Short term gain over long term pain is a paradigm whose time must be over.

   I'd appreciate your support.
