We, the high school students from Douglas, understand that curfews are reasonable guidelines and should be followed. While it may seem unfair or unreasonable at the time, we realize how beneficial such rules are and that you are looking out for our well-being.
We high school students would like to ask Mayor and Council to please consider amending the current ordinance to differentiate between high school students, ages 14 to 17, from younger youth in middle and elementary school. As such, we are asking that high school aged teens have their curfew be 11:00 pm on school nights, Sunday through Thursday during the school year and 1:00 am on Friday and Saturday nights.
With this amendment to the current ordinance, you will show us that you trust that high school students can be responsible members of the community with more privileges than other younger youth. It would allow us the opportunity to grow in our independence and maturity as we transition to life out of high school. Please allow us the opportunity to show responsible behavior by treating us different than 8 and 9 year old children. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
