The City of College Park, MD is proposing to rent for free for 40 years to the University of Maryland a centrally located vacant school building and grounds valued at $788,500. The University of Maryland will contract with Bright Horizons to create a for-profit day care center with 12 of 120 spots reserved for City residents. The University will pay the building maintenance costs and renovate the facility, but the City will maintain the grounds. Community meeting space will be available on nights and weekends, and some city staff will work in the building, but the University will not pay taxes to occupy the building.

Why are the tax-paying residents of College Park subsidizing a for-profit day care company and the University of Maryland? The College Park Mayor and Council will vote on March 28 on this proposal, and the vote should be delayed until the City can provide additional information on how this will benefit all City residents. The full details are here:http://www.collegeparkmd.gov/document_center/Admin/Other/Calvert%20Road%20School%20Term%20Sheet.pdf
