The City of St Louis under the leadership of Mayor Lyda Krewson has demanded the removal of a Confederate Monument which is located in Forest Park and is within the city limits of St. Louis.

The monument was dedicated in December 1914 after the Ladies’ Confederate Monument Association spent 15 years raising $23,000 for its construction. To avoid provoking further antagonism to the project, the Association declared that the design they would choose could not depict any figure of a Confederate soldier or object of modern warfare.

The resulting monument features a 32-foot-high granite shaft with a low relief figure of “The Angel of the Spirit of the Confederacy.” Below is a bronze group, sculpted by George Julian Zolnay, depicting the response of the South to this spirit as a family sends a youth off to war.

The City of St. Louis was approached by the Missouri Civil War Museum, which is Non-profit, non-governmental organization and the museum offered to remove the monument and place it into the museum at no cost to the city. The museum is also in possession of the deed to the monument which makes them the rightful owners. The city has however gone silent on the matter and it appears that Lyda Krewson and the city counsel refuse to cooperate. As of 06/17/2017, The Missouri Civil War Museum filed a law suit against the City of St. Louis in an attempt to resolve the matter. The City of  St. Louis has many other social issues which should be addressed. A long drawn out case over possession would be a waste of tax payer money.

The signers of this petition ask that the property rights of the Missouri Civil War Museum be respected and that they be given due process under law as the rightful and legal owners of the monument. Or that the City of St. Louis simply cooperate and accept the generous offer from the museum to remove and properly preserve the Confederate Monument out of respect for all who suffered in the conflict.
