James Carter started this petition to Maynard High School Administration

The dress code present at our school is sexist and unfair.

A dress code is the sexualization of young children. Women especially. It is punishing the young women in our school system for taking control of their bodies and for being comfortable in their own skin.

The dress code is targeting feminine clothing. Feminine clothing that all genders can wear but still are seen (by the faculties eyes) as mostly worn by women. The dress code enforces outdated sexist behaviors and the favoritism of the male gender. Why arent we teaching boys not to sexualize us and instead punishing girls for self expression.

Our society has taught and conditioned girls to hate their bodies, to want to change their bodies, to feel ashamed, to blame themselves, to feel small, to feel silenced. Our dress code directly contributes to that. There is nothing shameful about my body. There is nothing shameful about anyone's body. A woman's body is hers and hers only and we must move past this disgusting area of blame and shame.

let’s work together to make a change. Let’s empower each other. Support self expression. Stand up for feminism.
