Jane Doe started this petition to Mayfield Grammar School for Girls

Recently, skirt lengths have been one of the priorities for a lot of the teachers at our school, and have been the main focus in everyone's minds. I, and many of my fellow students, believe the rules enforced upon skirts are much too strict and definitely cross a line.

There have been teachers coming to public places after school hours are over, to check skirt lengths and ensure they are not anywhere above the knee. This is extremely unfair and quite frankly is taking it too far. Is it really okay to follow students out of school and intrude upon their out-of-school lives, and have to dampen their afternoon out?

A large majority of the teachers have advised us, on many occasions, to purchase a new skirt if it is above the knee, however many of us simply cannot afford this – with skirt prices approximately being £37, for just one, which I personally, and I'm sure you'd agree, find this absurd.

Many of us have exams approaching, and if not, are very busy with school and such. Why should we have to worry constantly about our skirts and how much of our legs are visible whilst walking through the school? Why should we have to fear seeing staff in hallways merely because of our skirts? It's degrading and distracts too many students. Conversations about the unfairness can be heard anywhere in the school at any time, and it needs to end. We are not proposing abolish the skirt length restriction, we just want the rules to be less strict, and we want it to stop taking over our school lives.
