Dear Choctaw Freedmen Descendants of the Burris-Coleman-Butler Family & Supporters

“Our Footprints Are There”

The Choctaw Freedmen Ancestors & their descendants of the Burris-Coleman-Butler Family & Supporters are collecting signatures to keep pressure on Chief Gary Batton of the Choctaw Nation so we can secure a meeting with him to discuss making changes to the Choctaw Nation Constitution and reclaiming our Choctaw Citizenship with the Choctaw Nation. Choctaw Freedman are former slaves who lived, married members within the tribe, and become a part of the Choctaw Nation. They were granted citizenship in 1885 in the Choctaw Nation. However, in 1983 some decades later, their citizenship was rescinded in the Choctaw Nation’s Constitution. We want Chief Gary Batton to honor and keep his word which he has agreed to meet with the Choctaw Freedmen as stated in his "Open Letters" dated 05/27/2021 & 07/01/2021 which are published on Chief Batton's blog on www.ChoctawNation.com

Take a moment and add your name to our petition to tell Chief Gary Batton that you want designated representatives from the Burris-Coleman-Butler Family & Supporters of the Choctaw Freedmen to have a seat at the table, so we can address issues on reclaiming our Choctaw Citizenship with the Choctaw Nation Tribe and updating the Choctaw Nation’s Constitution to reflect this. These issues need to reflect an equitable and fairer place for our Choctaw Freedmen Ancestors & their Descendants of the Choctaw Freedmen. It's long overdue for the Choctaw Nation to update its Constitution to reflect our citizenship again and include the Choctaw Freedmen in the upcoming Oklahoma History Supplement Book to be published next year. Our goal is that the Choctaw Freedmen Citizenship Footprints, Inc.committee meet with Chief Batton in Fall 2022. Thank you for your support!
