The students of the Los Angeles School of Global Studies (LASGS) demand that Congress pass to permanently eliminate Trump's zero-tolerance policy that everyone crosses the border is not charged with criminal proceeds. In addition, Congress should develop alternatives to detention centers - such as check-ins at ICE offices, home visits, and telephonic monitoring.

Congress needs to act now because:

  • In our school, many of our students are undocumented minors who experienced the real struggle of detention first hand.
There are at least 100 detention centers in 17 states and the numbers are increasing.
  • According to The Cut, An average of 45 migrant children are being ripped from their families per day and they are being placed in detention centers on their own.
  • According to The Cut, More than 11,000 children are currently in detention. In addition, the government is constructing "tender age" shelters in abandoned warehouses that house up to 240 children.
  • According to Think Progress, 22 immigrants had died in detention in the last two years. This is likely due to abuse and poor medical attention. Several children have recently died.
  • According to Democracy Now, Trump removed Kirsten Nielsen from her position because she did not believe in the idea of family separation and wanted somebody who would enforce her draconian policy.

This matters to us because there are many undocumented students in our school and many have stories to tell.
