Every year supermarkets throw out millions of dollars worth of edible food yet 2 million Australians go hungry. Currently, supermarkets discard food that is past it's 'use-by' date and therefore inedible. In turn, food relief charities struggle to keep up with demand for fresh food by those in need. Legislating for a 'sell-by' date on food products sold at large supermarkets would require them to donate food products not sold by the 'sell-by' date to food charities. The 'sell-by' date would be prior to the 'use-by' date ensuring it would still be fresh and edible when distributed to those in need.
This simple change would effectively address the social and environmental problem of food wastage and hunger in Australia as demonstrated by other countries.
