David Copeland started this petition to Mauldin High School and

Our school and school district currently uses plastic lunch trays to distribute the standard school fed lunches. These trays are not only thrown away and not recycled but they are 0% pre-consumer recycled content, and the company that manufactures them, Pactiv, offers no support towards recycling them. There is no real reason to use these trays are our lunch consists of one standard food item, fries which are often in a separate tray, milk, and possibly another fruit which many students opt out of taking. All these items can easily fit on a paper plate. In today's day and age where so much plastic already ends up sitting in landfills for the of eternity as styrofoam does not decompose, EVER, doing our part to limit our usage of these items is essential. While this change seems small, over time it will make a big difference.

If only half of the 2,316 (1158) students at our school eat school lunch every day, for 180 days, then in my 4 years at Mauldin Highschool we have thrown away 833,760 styrofoam trays (208440 trays per year). Just one of these trays weighs about 12.00 oz, so that's 10,005,120 oz or 625,320 pounds of unrecycled plastic from our school alone in just four years.

Not only are our plastic trays inefficient and environmentally irresponsible but they aren't any cheaper than recyclable/ biodegradable alternatives. Our school buys trays in cases of 500 for $24.95 from local plastic distributors. On Amazon, you can buy 500 biodegradable sugar cane plates for $24.99, this is without a deal with a distributor.

Its time to get rid of these trays and start helping our environment!
