On Thursday, April 12th at 9:30am the Maricopa County Planning and Zoning Commission is holding a meeting to request a change to the land use designation for the 640 acre parcel of land, generally located at the Northeast Corner of 7th Ave and Cloud Rd, known locally as The Square. The change would be to remove the  'Town Center' designation.  The zoning would remain 'Single Family-Rural (0-1 du/ac-1 house per acre).  The current Town Center designation provides the New River Planning Area 1) a place to locate future community services in our rural community as the County grows; and 2) a buffer of open space that would be required at the exterior of the site to ensure a gradual transition from the Town Center uses to the neighboring residential land uses. 

This land is currently used by many of our neighbors for horseback riding, dog walks and other recreational activities.  Removing the Town Center designation means the potential for more homes in our community when the State Land Department decides to sell this Trust Land. 

As a community, we would like to see this land preserved as open space with possible future development limited to community services such as equestrian trails and walking paths.  As a community, we are requesting that Maricopa County and the Board of Supervisors hear our voices when designing the New River Daisy Mountain Area Plan. The community is committed to preserving our rural landscape.

This matter will be heard at the Planning and Zoning Commission on Thursday, April 12, 2018 at 9:30 am at 205 W Jefferson Street in Phoenix. If the P&Z Commission recommends approval, this matter will be placed on the consent agenda at the Board of Supervisors meeting scheduled on Wednesday, May 9 at 9:30 am at the same location. If an appeal is received within 15 calendar days following the P&Z Commission hearing, the item will be placed on the regular agenda at the Board of Supervisors hearing. Appeal of Commission Recommendation can be filed with the Planning & Development Department at PZAppeal@mail.maricopa.gov.

If you disagree with the designation change and want your voice heard, please sign this petition to request the County to keep the designation as 'Town Center' and preserve this State Land as open space with Community Services not residential homes or future master planned communities. In the Maricopa County Vision for 2030, Land Use Policy and County Island sections, it states that Maricopa County's goal is to annex unincorporated county islands into municipalities and supports the urban development of the unincorporated county islands that are annexed. If you feel passionate about this, your voice matters to help us Save the Square and our Rural Community.
