BASIS Chandler Student Government
Dear BASIS Chandler Students,
In the past, BASIS Chandler administration has not been supportive of student councils and governments primarily due to the fact that they aren’t comfortable or willing to allow students to have larger voices in the school they go to. But as students it’s our responsibility to not only study well but to find ourselves a safe and comfortable environment to nurture our minds and progress. Without the opportunity given to us to make these changes, our opinions are left behind and we are left vulnerable to the pressures of our school which we can take control of with a student government.
With the establishment of a student government the assessment calendar would be created in cooperation between students and teachers to accommodate students’ schedules. As of right now, students’ schedules are created in a way that does not provide for a system of consistency leading to some weeks having little to no assignments/assessments while others have weeks full of stress and anticipation. This ultimately builds an unhealthy mental environment for BASIS Chandler students.
With the establishment of a student government, students are advocated for in a higher forum of policy making allowing them to have a direct voice in the policies that affect them. For example, every week, teachers have meetings to discuss the student body and their curriculum, but students are never a part of these meetings. When we want to voice our opinions, we are asked to go through a third party (such as another teacher) effectively silencing our purpose and voices leading to a misrepresentative decision making process.
A Student Government would also allow individual organizations like Red Cross, She’s the First and Service Club to focus on their goals of community service without getting caught up in inter-BASIS activities like Homecoming and Sports Games allowing their members to understand the dedication to community service.
While these are some main goals of our Student Government, these are in no way limitations to what more the establishment can provide. The whole point of student government is to allow students to feel represented in the school they attend every day. The goals of our student government are entirely reliant on the needs of the student body, but these problems cannot be fixed without your support, so please join us in signing this petition to help the BASIS Chandler administration understand the necessity of a student government!
Sincerely, your fellow allies at BASIS Chandler
