Maryland Residents Residents started this petition to Matt Slatkin and

Montgomery County, Maryland only provides 45 minutes of Physical Education per week in elementary school. Prince George's County and Anne Arundel County also do not offer the bare minimum of 90 minutes of Physical Education per week. Our neighbors to the north in Frederick County, east in Howard County, south in Washington D.C. and west in Virginia provide their students with at least 90 minutes of Physical Education each week.  There is a bill in Annapolis, House Bill 110, that would mandate that all schools in Maryland provide a minimum of 90 minutes of Physical Education each week in elementary schools.  A student's zip code should not determine the amount of Physical Education they get each week.  Myself, Delegate Jay Walker, Maryland's Medical Society, American Heart Association, Maryland's Pediatric Medical Society, American Cancer Society, and a neuroscience-based organization all testified in Annapolis to vote yes to this bill.  All of the above health organizations recommended 150 minutes of Physical Education per week. For whatever reason, Montgomery County Public Schools and some other Maryland school systems opposes this bill.

Delegate Anne Kaiser represents Montgomery County and she is the Chair of the Ways and Means Committee.  Delegate Kaiser decides what bills get voted on.  Last year a poll was conducted and 94% of Montgomery County residents supported this bill.  Delegate Kaiser refused to put the bill up for a vote despite the fact that her constituents wanted it passed.  This leads me and many others to believe that the reason Delegate Kaiser did not put the bill up for a vote is because the powerful Montgomery County Public Schools opposed it.  In addition to signing this petition, please call and email Delegate Kaiser and the Montgomery County Board of Education and request that Delegate Kaiser put the bill up for a vote this year and that the Board votes in favor of the bill at their February 12th meeting.

Unfortunately, some school systems simply will not provide a bare minimum of 90 minutes of Physical Education per week on their own and this mandate is much needed for our kids.  Some school systems do not believe the science that links more Physical Education and better test scores.  We are in the midst of a childhood sedentary, low fitness level, obesity epidemic.  I have been teaching Middle School Physical Education in Montgomery County for 14 years and I have seen our kids' fitness levels fall drastically year after year.  Please sign and demand our politicians and school boards do right by our youth and thank you!!!
