Ravenna High School sports should move to a different conference - NO MORE WMC!

Ravenna High School athletes deserve to compete on a level playing field.  The best way to achieve this goal is for RHS to leave the West Michigan Conference and to enter the Central States Athletic Association.

Over the past half century, Ravenna has resided in the WMC.  When Ravenna joined the West Michigan Conference in 1969 (according to www.michigan-football.com/f/ravenna.htm) all of the schools were somewhat equal in size (Whitehall did not join until 1985).  While all public schools have spikes in enrollment, Ravenna High School has stayed fairly close to their 30 year average of 352 students.  At the same time, Whitehall has grown to nearly 700 students, while Oakridge is up to nearly 600.  Even Montague, Shelby, and Mason County Central have all peaked at over 500 students.  Now - to make matters worse - the WMC is considering adding Manistee, Ludington, Fremont, and Orchard View!

Since 1985, Ravenna has the least amount of conference championships in the entire conference!  While there are many contributing factors, including travel distance, athletic budget, and many more, the main factor is the enrollment.  It is nearly impossible for Ravenna to compete with a schools that are nearly double in size!  Yes, Ravenna is usually very competitive in certain sports (such as football), we are left behind in most other sports.

The application to enter the CSAA has been sent to our Athletic Director, but the directive from our Superintendent is that we should wait to see how things change in the WMC.  Please help to encourage our administrative staff to stop waiting and take action!
