Jenelle Ambroise is a joyful light in the lives of students at the Amos A. Lawrence public K-8 school in Brookline, but is being asked to leave a job which is a labor of love for her. As a long-time "lunch lady", she knows all of the students, their likes and dislikes, and they look forward to her singing to them on their birthdays. My children love her, as do many others, and she has provided stability and support through years of planned and unplanned staff transitions at the school. In the Lawrence cafeteria, she is in her element and works well with her colleagues.
Unfortunately, Jenelle has PTSD from a childhood trauma, and has encountered interpersonal difficulties with higher-ups in food services administration and is now being asked to leave. She wants nothing more than to stay and to continue doing her job, and her students feel the same way. She is a conscientious employee and these frictions can easily be worked around - she has no difficulty with her Lawrence supervisor or other colleagues, and is a fixture at school events.
Brookline should accommodate Jenelle's disability, both as a matter of self-interest and to do the right thing, by allowing her to stay at her job and facilitating more careful and less triggering interactions with food services administrators. Please share your support for Jenelle, and ask Brookline to keep Jenelle at Lawrence where she belongs! This is more important than ever as Lawrence faces a third change in principals in as many years.
