Do not make these traffic circles permanent! Assess other strategies such as all-way stop signs, speed bumps, and changed crosswalk locations to address all traffic-related safety issues, not just speeding, on 42nd St. NW, especially at intersections.

We, the undersigned, fully support the need to improve traffic-related safety conditions on 42nd St. NW between Van Ness and Yuma St., including at it's intersections with the north and south branches of Warren St.. However, we do not support DDOT’s plan for the neighborhood traffic circles. Our experience with the temporary test circles is that they do not satisfactorily or adequately address the range of traffic-related safety issues at the specified location, and that the traffic circles have generated a number of dangerous conditions in their own right and negative impacts on properties immediately surrounding them.

We therefore request that no work be undertaken to make these traffic circles permanent before an independent and objective assessment has been carried out to address a broader range of traffic-related safety issues (not just traffic calming/speeding issues) on 42nd St. NW and at its intersections with Warren St. that affect the neighborhood. The assessment should consider negative impacts of the circles on adjacent properties, and alternative strategies such as all-way stop signs, speed bumps, and changed crosswalk locations.
