Material Fees Overcharge

Material Fees Overcharge
Why this petition matters
Final year students of the School of Hospitality and Tourism at the University of Technology, Jamaica, without practical/lab classes, are being charged lab fees for modules that do not contain a practical aspect. They are being asked to pay $20000 for this fee then to put in a request for it to be refunded which has not been a successful process for students thus far to get back these monies paid. The finance department advised that it can be removed from the system but it has to go through SHTM. Members of staff at the school (SHTM) however, are demanding that the fee is paid after which a request can be made for a refund instead of making the process simple and aid in the removal to mitigate such a tedious process. Some of these students have only 1 to 3 modules left to complete and have expressed that this $20000 fee is a large sum to be added to their tuition that they did not plan for in which some cannot afford to pay. These students are outraged as they are in fear that if they do not pay the fee they might be bared from accessing classes that they have paid for. They are therefore asking peacefully for the fee to be removed and to be charged fairly for modules that they are sitting.
